The Mexican
Weather resilient overhead night lighting
The story goes..
Some years ago, during a busy night shoot in Cancún, everything was going to plan—until the weather turned South, Fast.
With winds suddenly picking up, overhead moonboxes had to be dropped for safety.
It could’ve meant calling the day early but the local rigging gaffer had another idea. Build a truss frame on the end of an arm and load it with Astera tubes.
The low surface area of the frame meant it could stay up safely in the wind, and they were able to keep shooting through the night, Brilliant.
The rig works so well, we’ve adopted it ourselves, naming it fittingly with respect. ‘The Mexican.’
At IE, we offer this rig for nights we know the wind will be a factor.
It’s light, versatile, and easy to deploy, ideal when conditions are unpredictable.
A layer of diffusion can also be added if the weather allows, giving you even softer output when needed.
You can keep it in the back pocket in case the weather turns, or put it straight to work from crew call as a soft, even base layer or fill.
It also makes an ideal day to night transitional rig as it can be a negative fill/flyswat up until sunset. Then with a quick fabric peel you’re straight into a light box.
Either way, it’s earned our respect and its place in Legend. Tequila!
